Justice & God’s Character

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Passage: “Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.” (Isaiah 30:18 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 25:1-12

God’s Justice is Love

A well-known biblical adage is “God is love” (1 John 4:8 ESV). Unlike worldly justice, which often emphasizes punishment, God’s justice is rooted in His love. Let’s take a moment to reflect on this: when the Bible discusses justice, it regularly highlights the importance of helping the marginalized and victimized. The Golden Rule tells us to treat others the way we want to be treated (Matthew 7:12). God calls us to show compassion, even toward those who have wronged us, as Romans 12:17 (ESV) states, “Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honourable in the sight of all.” God is love, and calls us to love as well.

God’s Justice is Merciful

Although many believe the Great Flood resulted from God’s anger, it was also an expression of His mercy. God saved one family, as they were the last remaining righteous ones. Consider this: would we even be here today if God hadn’t removed evil from the earth? Psalm 82:3-4 (ESV) states, “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the rights of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” God is merciful, and calls us to be merciful as well.

God’s Justice Restores

God’s justice teaches us that His way is the ultimate path to healing and restoration. When individuals find themselves as victims of violence or injustice, God offers a deep comfort that heals. On the other hand, if someone has caused harm to others, God’s justice invites them to reflect on their actions, encouraging genuine repentance and reconciliation with those they have wronged. A powerful example of this transformative journey is in the life of Paul, who was once known as Saul of Tarsus. Initially, he fervently persecuted Christians, believing he was upholding God’s Law. However, after a profound encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, he became one of the most influential apostles, passionately declaring Jesus as Saviour and King (see Acts 22:3-21). God restores, and calls us to restore as well.

Prayer: Father, help us better understand Your character so we can model our lives after You, loving well, showing mercy, pursuing restoration, and seeking justice. Amen.

Reflection: How do you relate to the Bible stories where God intervened to provide justice? How can you live by those principles today?
