Theme of the Week: God. Men.
Bible Verse: And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 CSB
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:23-31
Putting God first above all things isn’t easy, and I haven’t found too many men who have completely figured it out. I have met men who have learned how to practically make him Lord in certain areas, but they seem to have more challenges in other areas and settings. In particular, men having trouble keeping God and his ways number one in their 9 to 5. Whether it’s work or school, this area seems to be much more challenging because there are different factors involved.
When it comes to their job, I think it’s safe to say that many men are not working in Christian environments. You signed a contract, you have a job description, and tasks you need to do line up with the mission and vision of the company or organization you work with. You also have a boss who might have expectations on how you are supposed to operate, which might not always line up with the morals and values you have as a Christian. Whether it’s stepping over people to succeed or trying to take advantage of a situation to make more money, there’s always that tension when it comes to pleasing your boss versus pleasing God. I think we need to keep the idea of “seeking first His kingdom” in mind, which will ultimately keep God Lord of your work and your boss.
Another area of our 9 to 5 is school. Some of you reading this are students, so you know how hard it is to live with Jesus as Lord of your life when you’re walking down the hallways of a public school. It’s easy to just go with the flow with the culture and slide under the radar so we aren’t teased or bullied because of our faith. Unfortunately, when we do that, we are putting someone else and their opinions above God.
I know neither one of these settings are easy to keep God as Lord, but I encourage you to do everything in the name of the Lord. It’s hard but not impossible.
