Lord of Your Household

In Daily Devotional by Mike Gordon

Theme of the Week: God. Men.

Bible Verse: These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 CSB

Scripture Reading: Psalm 27:1-14

What does it look like for God to be Lord over your household? We probably could go in many different directions on this because it looks different for everyone. However, the scriptures are clear that we are to exalt God and his ways in our homes at all times. Living for God just on Sundays in the church but not making him the priority at home isn’t how we are called to live.

In saying that, I can’t assume that all Christian men even go to church these days.

In recent years, on a Sunday morning, it has become common to see the mother by herself with her young children at a church service. Over time, as these kids grow older, the conversation at home becomes, “Dad doesn’t go to church, so why should I?” Eventually, mom goes to church alone, and the kids stay home with dad. Perception-wise, it doesn’t appear that God is Lord of that father’s life if he doesn’t even care to go to church on a Sunday. A father’s actions have a domino effect. The message this gives to his children is that God isn’t important in their home. Therefore, why would they care for God to be Lord in their own personal life?

Is God the Lord of your home? As a husband and a father, does your family see that you have made God the priority? This goes beyond church attendance. Do they see you praying, reading your Bible, reflecting the fruit of the Spirit, or even saying grace before you eat? If your family can’t see that God is Lord, then there’s a good chance that he isn’t.
