Loving God with Your Whole Self

In Daily Devotional, Spiritual Growth by Jordan Harnum

Theme of the Week: Heart, Mind, Strength

Bible Verse: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30

I can still remember the first time I heard the saying “Don’t be a Sunday Saint, and a Monday aint”

It came from my Sunday School teacher. And it was a challenge as a teenager, to not just be a Christian on Sunday’s but every day of the week. That idea has stuck with me since.

Why is it so easy to love and serve God only when it is convenient for us? We love God in certain spaces, at certain times, in certain ways – but do not fully commit every part of our being to our Creator.

In Mark 12:30, Jesus commands us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind & strength. To me that sounds like everywhere, every way, always. It sounds like Jesus is commanding us to live fully for him.

Even on Tuesdays, or when we are mowing the lawn, while we punch numbers at work, or wait for our daughter’s dance recital to finish.

Loving the Lord in this way means we love him with our intellect, our bodies, our attitudes and our relationships.

Our call is to love God with our whole self, all the time – not just on Sundays, or when it feels right. Is this difficult? You bet!

This command to love God with our heart, soul, mind & strength cannot be done on our own, but is only possible with the Lord’s help as we follow Him closely. I don’t know about you but I am up for the challenge.

This week in our devotionals, we will be following along Sunder Krishnan as he writes about what it means to love God in this way. Our hope is that these devotionals are an encouragement to you and your friends, so please share with your friends and be sure to subscribe here to get them into your inbox each and every day.
