Memories of Hellfire and Brimstone

In Daily Devotional, Life Issues, Stress, Fear & Anxiety by Mike Gordon

Theme of the Week: Sin Is Real

Bible Verse: Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:14-15, CSB

Scripture Reading: Revelation 20:14-15

Elephant in the room: The Bible Verses for today might be the worst way to start off a week’s worth of devotions. The truth is many of us were introduced to the world of sin with verses like this. Or, at the very least, these are the type of scriptures we remember when we think of sin today. No wonder we don’t want to talk about sin.

I bet you still have memories of the person who introduced the hellfire and brimstone side of sin. Was it an old Sunday school teacher who wore the same clothes every week and used a felt board to share this message? Or maybe it was your parent who used sin as a way to discipline so you would behave better in public? Or was it someone who bluntly called you out of your sins when you got older? No wonder so many people grow up steering away from these teachings, church, and ultimately God.

Although there is truth to Revelations 20: 14-15, the hope this week is to help you gain a more rounded understanding of sin beyond what you were taught in your Sunday school years.
