Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall…

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Passage: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts…” (Psalm 139:23 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Psalm 139:1-24

Over the years of our lives as men, we use many tools. But one in particular usually doesn’t get a lot of mention:

The mirror.

You read that right! The mirror has been a part of our lives since we were boys.

When we were five years old, we used it to see the huge muscles we didn’t actually have.

As teenagers, we checked it daily to see the new mustache hair under our nose, proving that we were leaving boyhood behind.

Then in our twenties, we used the mirror to make sure our hair was just right before we went on our first date with the girl who might one day be our wife.

In our thirties, we again used it to try to see the huge muscles we once had but have “loosened up” since the kids came along.

In our forties, we use it to make sure our graying beard is trimmed just right.

Then, in our fifties, we use it to make sure whatever little hair we have left is still looking great. And on it goes.

We have also used the mirror for other purposes.

Like when we doubt ourselves, and try to talk ourselves either into or out of something.

Or when we look at an old scar and are reminded of a story that gets told too often.

But the most provocative way we use the mirror is when we mess up and look at ourselves with shame, wondering who the real “me” is and how God could ever love us.

And it’s moments like these where a man’s sense of identity takes a real hit.

This week, we will be looking at the topic of our identity as men, but not in the usual way.

Instead of looking at it inwardly, as something we understand about ourselves, I want us to look at our identity like how a mirror looks at us—as a reflection. A reflection of ourselves, our wives, our families, our workplace, and of course, our relationship with Jesus.

So, grab your Bible, and let’s see what God has for us and our identity as men.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You know everything about me and love me. Help me to grow in my identity in You this week. Amen.

Reflection: Read Psalm 139. Then take a look in the mirror and write down the thoughts you have about yourself and any thoughts God has about you according to His Word.
