Bible Passage: “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)
Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:13-18
Transformers were introduced in the early 80s.
I remember when they showed up at school in the hands of my friends. They were the toys that I wanted. “More than meets the eye…” was the slogan, and I can still hear both the tune and the sound effects echoing down the halls of my memory.
One toy that transformed into something else—such as a robot that also became a sports car. Tired of one thing? Change it into the other option and enter an entirely new mode of imagination.
One thing that can become something entirely different.
In the case of the Transformers, one thing isn’t necessarily better than the other (although I certainly had my favorite form for each character).
But when it comes to our transformation, men? The second form is definitely better than the first.
Before we examine Paul’s encouragement to the believers in Corinth to become something more than meets the eye, we must examine the situation in Corinth, including some history and context.
Paul planted the church in Corinth on his second missionary journey. He spent about 18 months in the area and had a well-established church by the time he left.
Unfortunately, over time, the church encountered difficulties: divided factions, aligning with certain teachers, challenges separating from cultural traditions like idol worship, battling the importance/significance of wealth, etc.
So Paul, as Paul did, wrote some letters. In fact, he wrote the church in Corinth more than just the two letters we have in the Bible.
Paul’s biggest concern in this, his 2nd letter, was that the Corinthian church was dismissing him as an apostle in favor of wealthier and more polished speakers.
It’s no surprise, really, that he encourages them with the words of today’s passage.
In Jesus, we are becoming something more than what we were!
How often do men need this message?
Corinth was having a hard time letting go of the standards of their old lives, where wealth and power were so important. Paul wanted them to understand that in Jesus, all those old ways could be left behind. They were being transformed into something new, something different from what they used to be.
Men, Jesus is still in the transforming business. He takes where we have come from and what we used to be and reforms us into something new, something that can do things our old form could not.
Prayer: Father in heaven, thank You for making me a transformer. Thank You that I am becoming something more than what I used to be. Help me to see the transformation and be encouraged by it. Amen.
Reflection: Are there any areas in your life where you are using old standards or stuck in old ways? How can you allow Jesus to transform those things?
