Theme of the Week: Listening With Jesus
Bible Verse: “…if you embrace this kingdom life and don’t doubt God, you’ll not only do minor feats…but also triumph over huge obstacles.” Matthew 21:21-22
Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:18-22
I’m not a “manual” kind of guy. If I have to put something together, I’ll decide whether or not to read the manual by the number of pages it has. I would much rather learn by hands-on experience. Some people can read a book to learn, while others have to see, touch or experience it.
Can you imagine how amazing life would have been as a disciple, spending your days under the teaching of Jesus? A day in the life with Him was frontline, one-on-one learning from the best life-skills teacher who ever walked the earth. The gospels are full of phenomenal examples of how Jesus taught in a way no modern book could ever teach. These men watched Jesus raise people from the dead, cast out demons, and calm raging storms. By the command of His voice, the disciples saw a fig tree that was in bloom wither away in an instant and fed thousands of hungry people in one sitting, just to name a few.
We may not have the same opportunity as these hand-picked men who got to walk with Jesus, but the Bible teaches us how to apply these same skills and lessons. I really like how the Message Bible paraphrases what Jesus says in Mark 6:8-9:
Don’t think you need a lot of extra equipment for this. You are the equipment. Not special appeals for funds. Keep it simple.
No extra tools required. No certificates. All we need are the tools He has provided for us. Every time the disciples (like us) questioned Him or had doubt or fear, it became an opportunity for Jesus to give them on-the-job training. Trade your shoes for sandals today. Take a crash course in discipleship and learn from the ultimate teacher.
