Our Response: Good Stewardship

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Theme of the Week: Being Good Stewards of Creation

Bible Verse: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 2:22-23 NIV

Scripture Reading: Colossians 2:22-23, Matthew 25:14-30

What should be our response to God’s goodness in creation? Well, I think it’s safe to say that half-heartedness is not something we should be aiming for. Looking at the verses today, they seem to indicate that whatever we do (including caring for creation) should be done with all our hearts. That good stewardship should look like full engagement.

The parable of the talents that Jesus speaks of in Matthew 25 talks about two engaged servants and one who decided to allow fear to keep them from full engagement. The words He had for the servant who buried His treasure are haunting – It’s certainly much better for us to be fully engaged.

But fully engaged in what? What is God specifically asking us to do in relation to caring for His creation?

For me, I need to start with prayer and asking God what this looks like. This may seem like an odd idea. Your prayer lists are probably overflowing with many urgent things and adding something like this might seem less important. But today I would encourage you to ask God what He’d like you to do in relation to being a good steward of His creation.

Perhaps He will speak to you about your workplace and being more environmentally friendly there, or about doing something around your home, or doing something as a family with your kids. Being open to hearing what He says can help put you into the “fully engaged” column. Give it a try – You may be surprised how God responds.
