Bible Passage: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” (Psalm 24:1 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Psalm 100:1-5
“Garage.”
What do you think of when you read that word?
I have been in all kinds of garages.
Some are pristine and organized; you could almost eat off the floor.
Some are messy and chaotic, everything covered with dirt and grime, everything smelling of earth and oil.
Some have parts of old cars in them.
Some store beautiful and expensive cars.
My dad was a plumber, and we had a garage on the property. It held shelves of fittings, taps, and fasteners. There were pipes made of plastic, copper, and steel. There was a vice, a welder, and an air compressor, among many other tools.
But this is what I have noticed about all those varied kinds of garages:
They each belong to someone.
They aren’t just rooms full of lost and broken objects that no one seems to know about.
I’ve been in well-maintained garages and, when I inquired about a certain item, it was easy to locate it in its logical place.
I’ve also been in very disordered garages, but when I inquired about a certain item there, the owner seemed to know exactly where it was, too.
Maybe you have a garage. It might be a big, three-bay monstrosity or a small, cubby hole in your basement. But it is yours!
And that’s the motif I would like to use this week in our devotional.
I’d like to imagine that every man who has received Jesus into his heart is a part of God’s garage.
King David wrote, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (Psalm 24:1 NIV).
So, for the next week, let’s be men who spend time in God’s garage and learn what it means to belong to Him!
As we understand who we are, our true identity, we can live with the most freedom, success, and joy.
Prayer: Dear Lord, this world, and sometimes my own heart, will try to tell me who and what I am. It will most often compare me to others. Sometimes that makes me feel powerful, and sometimes defeated. Neither of these feelings will last because my identity does not come from those places. My identity comes from You. Please give me the grace this week to hear everything You want me to hear and the faith to believe it! Amen.
Reflection: As we start this week, think about your garage or tool area. Think about what you have in there and the purpose, cost, and usefulness of each item. What does Jesus want to say to you about your purpose, cost, and usefulness?
