The Right Tool for the Job

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Bible Passage: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10 NKJV)

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1-8

I’m sure you have heard the phrase, “The right tool for the job.”

I’m also sure that not only have you heard it, but you have experienced it.

Whether you are trying to change out a spark plug, sharpen the blades on a lawn mower, or replace the oil filter on a car, the right tool makes all the difference.

I am also fairly sure there have been times when you needed to get a job done quickly but didn’t have the right tool.

So, you tried to use the wrong tool because you just didn’t have the time to go out and get the right one.

Maybe you found that the time you saved by not running out to get the right tool was quickly swallowed up by the extra time it took to fake it with the wrong tool.

Because we belong to Jesus, we have been uniquely gifted and set apart to do exactly what He wants us to do.

You are the right tool for the job He has in mind for you.

Maybe you think that you aren’t much use for anything. There is nothing further from the truth. Remember, you are in God’s garage, and everything in His garage is there for a reason. Ask the One to whom you belong. Seek Him and His desire for your life. He will reveal it to you.

Or maybe you think you’re like a Swiss Army Knife.  You can do everything, and you are fine on your own. Brother, that simply is not the case. You were made for a purpose, but not for every purpose. It can be easy to spread yourself too thin or to ignore others who might be able to help you.

You are part of God’s garage. Let Him show you what you should do. Let Him be the shop owner!

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You that You have made me with intent and desire. You have fashioned me perfectly like the super-engineer that You are. I want to be used by You however You choose. Keep me attentive to You. Keep me from thinking that it is up to me to determine what I am supposed to do. I am Yours. Amen.

Reflection: Have you ever done a spiritual gift assessment? There are all kinds of ways to begin discovering your gifts. You can use an online tool or speak to your spiritual leaders. Find out what you were made for and then allow God to use you in the right way.
