Pride and Self Sufficiency

In Daily Devotional by Marc Brûlé

Theme of the Week: Strength in the Lord

Bible Verse: “If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:11

Scripture Reading: Psalm 131:1-3

PPride and self-sufficiency. These are two great dangers for us. We speak of loving God with our strength. We speak of working for Him. The danger lies in the potential for pride in what we have done for Him.

Our very capacity to serve God comes from Him and not ourselves. I know it feels like you and I are doing the work. It feels like we are putting forth the effort. And that is true to a degree. Yet the strength we have to serve God and others comes from Him.

And when we’re done, the praise and glory belong to God. We have no bragging rights in what God has empowered us to do. It starts with Him, and it ends with Him.

Let’s not make the mistake of taking credit for any of the good we do. No matter how much it feels like it was your own effort, remember that it is God’s strength working through us.

Prayer: God, every good thing comes from you. May I be slow to take credit for the good you bring in my life. Thank you for the strength you give me each day to do what you wish for me to do.

Reflection: In what ways have you taken credit for something that was really God’s work to begin with?
