Red Light, Green Light

Theme of the Week: How God Teaches Us Through Winning and Losing

Bible Verse: In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 16:1-33

Traffic lights often get a bad rap. Well, not all traffic lights. Just the red ones. They have the ability to alter a person’s attitude and morph them from being the gentle school librarian to becoming a beast who needs soap in their mouth.

Lately, I have become more thankful for red lights. I know. I just let you label me as odd, but I’m okay with that. I have two reasons for this.

First, my red light is there to allow others to go. I mean, it’s already nuts out there, but can you imagine how chaotic traffic would be without the red light? Like me, other people have places to go and people to see. And like me, they all feel that their agenda is the most important of the day and want to see it happen. Without my red light, they would never be able to pursue that.

The second reason is that the red light forces me to slow down and stop. Life is busy. And all too often we are terrible at making room for slowing down and stopping. But the red light does this for us. It may be for only a few moments, but those don’t have to be wasted moments.

It is interesting that as I have journeyed with Jesus, I have desired only green lights and have struggled when He gives me a red one. I mean, it’s easy to see His hand when things are moving along smoothly, but where is His hand when things become hard?

Years ago, a high school friend showed me the verse above. Since then, it has stuck with me and given me foundational context to understand where God has been in my life. So, over the next few days, we will look at the combination of Scripture and life, and see how God works not only in the green lights but in the red ones too.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You are in every area of my life. Help me to be thankful for the green lights and trust You with the red ones. Amen.

Reflection: Read Proverbs 16:9, and start to see the red and green lights in your life.
