Bible Passage: “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14)
Scripture Reading: Colossians 2:15; 1 John 3:8
When I was a toddler, I was attacked by a swarm of bees.
I was with my family on a property that had an old bunkhouse that no one used. Because of that, no one knew that bees had built a hive underneath the steps. In my innocent childhood exploration, I went stomping up the steps, disturbed the hive, and was swiftly attacked.
Over 40 years later, I still remember the instant pain all over my body and turning every which way to see a cloud of black and yellow rage amidst the loud and angry buzzing. I cried out in pain, and my dad came running.
Charging into the swarm and grabbing me, he took on stings himself. He ran with me a good distance away until the swarm stopped chasing.
I had been stung numerous times all over my body. My parents were extremely alarmed. Was I allergic to bee stings? What a way to find out! But after a neighbor who was a nurse came over and examined me, I was deemed nonallergic, treated with lotions, and made a full recovery.
I was always grateful for what my father did, and when I had my own children, I actually understood how easy it must have been for him in that scary moment.
“My son is helpless and in danger; I must save him.”
That was us, too.
Satan had us deceived, blinded, lost in our sin, and helpless to save ourselves. We were afflicted and harassed by the enemy and all of his dirty tricks, “like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36).
Through the Cross, Jesus charged into our danger, and Himself took on the pain that we were experiencing. As He did, His rescue mission came into full effect, stripping the enemy of his power and freeing us from the grip of the devil (Colossians 2:15; 1 John 3:8).
Because of this, we are brought from darkness into light. We see clearly and understand in ever-increasing measure who our God is and how He selflessly ran into the swarm to save the children He loves.
We were once firmly in the enemy’s hands, bound in sin, fear, and darkness. Jesus has saved us from the devil’s power, and now we need fear him no more.
Prayer: Jesus, through Your death and resurrection, we proclaim You as Lord over all and the victor over the devil! We celebrate Your victory and are grateful for the price You paid! Help me walk in the light and the hope of Your win, and not be distracted by the enemy’s tricks and tactics. Amen.
Reflection: Take some time to give thanks today for all the ways that Jesus has rescued you, including from the devil’s grip!
