Bible Passage: “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” (John 12:26 NIV)
Scripture Reading: John 2:1-10
Thousand Foot Krutch is a Christian rock band that formed in the late ‘90s. My buddy Jamie played guitar with them for a while (you can see him on their video “Rawkfist”).
They came to Calgary, Alberta, to do a show and, because I knew Jamie, I was invited backstage to spend some time with the band. It was cool to go from sitting in the crowd with all the other fans to having the special and unique opportunity to hang out with the group in private. I got a front-row seat to observe them being themselves.
When I think of front-row seats, I can’t help but think of Jesus’ first miracle, when He turned water into wine.
It was at a wedding when the wine ran out. This was a particularly embarrassing thing for the host family, and Mary, Jesus’ mother, asked her son if He could do something about it.
Well, Jesus does, but the miracle mostly occurred in private; almost no one saw what Jesus did.
Except for one particular group:
The servants.
They got front row seats to Jesus’ amazing inaugural miracle!
Jesus asks them to do some things for Him, and they willingly comply. When the wine (that had just been water a moment ago) was brought to the master of the banquet, the Scripture says:
“…and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.” (John 2:9)
I love that line so much: “…though the servants knew”!
All the important people at the wedding missed what the lowly servants didn’t.
One of the most spectacular things about being a servant of Jesus is that you get to see and experience things that most others don’t. You get front-row seats to all the amazing things Jesus is doing in the world.
It makes sense. Serving was the reason He came to the earth. Therefore, those who serve will be most connected to what He is still doing on the earth!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me into Your work. Fill me with the joy and delight of seeing You do what only You can do. Continue to include me in Your adventures. You are awesome! Amen.
Reflection: Where have you seen Jesus do miraculous things? Ask Him to open your eyes so you can be like those servants and get to see what most people are oblivious to.
