Serving Through Divine Power

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Bible Passage: “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Mark 5:24-34

The story in Mark 5 of Jesus healing the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years is fascinating. There are so many things to talk about in this account, but I want to focus on one thing in particular.

In Mark 5:30, it says that, after the woman reached out and touched His clothes, “At once, Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him.”

The woman was healed, but it cost Jesus something. Power had “gone out” from Him.

It is the only time that the “cost” of Jesus’ healing miracles is noted, but I believe it was the same every time He performed a miracle.

Serving cost Jesus. And it will cost us, too.

That’s likely one of our biggest deterrents from doing it.

Paul talks about being “poured out” like water from a glass to help others (Philippians 2:17).

Serving can feel that way at times.

We are all busy guys. We’ve got work, we’ve got our kids’ activities, we’ve got our “honey-do” lists.

Where are we going to find the time and energy to serve others?

Not only that, but maybe we did serve in the past and were tired and spent after. So, the next time, we were a bit more hesitant to sign up for that extra voluntary thing.

What we can forget is that there is a Source that we can tap into for the strength to serve.

Paul noted this Source in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”

What if the Spirit of Christ were ready to fill you with all the strength you needed to serve in all the ways He wants you to serve?

What if He were ready to bless you abundantly, to give you all you need, so that you might abound in good works?

Would you want it?

Would you trust Him for it?

Would you receive it?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I sometimes forget that You are ready and willing to live Your life through me. I have received my new, eternal life from You and You alone. But then I try to live out this new life on my own strength. This was never what You intended. You are my supply. Fill me with Your grace and power, and then help me serve You and others with all my heart. Amen.

Reflection: Do you ever find yourself worn out from doing good? Are you hesitant to say yes when you’re invited to serve? How might you rely on Jesus to do all that He is asking you to do?
