Servants Are Laborers

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Theme of the Week: Godly Men Are Servants

Bible Verse: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 2:1-7, Colossians 3:23-24

When I think of serving, I automatically think of working. How about you? We’d probably have a consensus on that. So, to say that servants are laborers doesn’t seem like that big of a stretch for many of us.

A closer look at Colossians 3:22-24 gives us a clearer picture of who we are serving and what our perspective should be towards work. In verse 23 it says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart”.

Within scripture, there are only a few things that we are supposed to do with “all our hearts”, and Paul the Apostle is encouraging that whatever we do, we should be giving it our best effort. This means that you are fully engaged.

But why? Paul answers that question in verse 24 by giving us the right perspective as we look at all the activities that are before us in the upcoming days, weeks & year! A proper perspective is that whatever we do, we see it as working for the Lord.

Because Jesus is your Lord, you do it for Him. Yes, you may have someone who is your boss, but when you serve them with your whole heart, and with the right perspective, this brings glory to Jesus. Oh yeah! Do not forget that you also get an incredible reward (Matthew 25:21) when you have this perspective. Just in case you needed more motivation!

In my coaching practice, I talk with guys all the time who struggle with their work and I see the impact of a proper perspective. Maybe you’re one of those guys, so I offer this question to you:

Would changing your perspective give you more joy in your work? It’s usually not that simple, but I think it’s an excellent first step.

Would changing your perspective give you more joy in your work?

For those who enjoy their work – let this be a reminder you. Work for the Lord in everything. I trust you will find even more enjoyment today as you engage this perspective!
