Sex, Shame, & God’s Design

In Daily Devotional by Matt Cline

Bible Passage: “Now Adam knew Eve, his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, ‘I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.’” (Genesis 4:1 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Genesis 2:24-25; Genesis 3:6-8; Hebrews 12:2

It’s significant that the first thing that happened after the Fall was a married couple having sex.

It wasn’t praise, prayer, or fasting.

It was sex…and God told us about it (Genesis 4:1).

Godly sex is important in God’s eyes, and while Christians are too often silent on the topic, God actually promotes it.

In Genesis 3, we see Adam and Eve sin in the Garden with their eyes, mouths, and hands. It’s interesting, then, that they make loincloths, designed to cover their genitals. They didn’t sin with those body parts, but these parts of the body are designed for covenantal behavior.

In most biblical translations, the word “sex” itself isn’t used. Sexual relations are described using covenantal language, like “he knew her.”

Sex is a covenantal act, and it is the one God designed to consummate the marriage covenant, which mirrors His covenant with us.

By Adam and Eve covering their genitals, it’s like they intrinsically knew that sin puts a wedge in a covenant.

In Genesis 2:24-25, we see the establishment of both marriage and sex through God declaring that a man would leave his parents and cleave to his wife with nakedness and no shame. The two would then become one flesh.

This is a picture of Jesus leaving His Father in Heaven to cleave to His Bride on earth. While He hung on the Cross for all to see, Hebrews 12:2 says that He scorned its shame. Jesus never wants shame to interfere with a covenant.

Because God desires for humanity to live in His original design, He provided garments to cover Adam and Eve, and they proceeded to experience the oneness of that design.

In the same way, our Father provided His Son on the Cross to cover us with grace rather than the shame we all deserve to carry.

This week, we will explore God’s design for sexuality. To live sexually pure, many men try to refrain from sin without learning God’s true design. Many are taught that they are visual and sexual creatures, and have a deep need for physical affection; if God created these traits in men, it’s important to learn why.

You’ll learn God’s design for sex and what it was made for, and it will help reframe the way you see sex, lust, and temptations.

Colossians 1:16 says, “All things were created through Him and for Him.” We have to conclude that this is even true for sex.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your incredible grace. I have not always lived aligned with Your true design for sex and covenant, and I repent of the mistakes I’ve made. I repent of carrying shame for too long. Thank You for the all-sufficient sacrifice of Jesus dying on the Cross to take away my sin and my shame. I pray that I will honor You with my masculine sexuality from this day forward. Amen.

Reflection: Sexual shame for men can come from sexual experiences, a lack of sexual experiences, or messages we were taught. Do you carry any shame in this area? Ask God to help you receive His grace in place of your shame, and to rewrite the story of your sexuality moving forward.
