Strength in the Storm of Natural Disaster

In Daily Devotional by Brian Doerksen

Theme of the Week: Strength in the Storm

Bible Verse: “A wise man built his house on the rock. . . . the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:24

When I wrote this, the news was all about another earthquake. This one struck in the middle of the night with no warning. Just as we don’t choose our storms in advance, we often get no warning disaster is imminent. So how do we prepare?

The scriptures tell us to build upon the rock before the storm strikes.

If you want your building to stand, there is nothing more important than a solid foundation. Establishing that foundation is hard and hidden work – yet the storm reveals its quality and integrity for all to see.

“ … a wise man built his house on the rock. … the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:24

No matter how smart science gets – humans will never be able to predict or prevent all natural disasters. The best strategy is preparation!

Young men need to build a foundation for their lives before their life is full of family and financial responsibilities. In a culture saturated with entertainment targeting young men, this will require brotherhood and determined effort. In my teens and 20’s, I devoted myself to worship and strong biblical teaching with some close friends and brothers. I memorized and studied the scriptures. I joined and led many extended missions trips. These things, together with serving in the local church, established a biblical worldview in me, and laid a foundation to withstand many storms to come.

While not everyone will live through an actual earthquake – we all need to build on bedrock. That way – if disaster strikes we are ready. And when it’s over, we’ll still be standing.
