Strength in the Storm of Opposition

In Daily Devotional by Brian Doerksen

Theme of the Week: Strength in the Storm

Bible Verse: “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.” Nehemiah 4:14

Scripture Reading: Nehemiah 4:1-23, Titus 2:7,8, Philippians 1:27-30

Have you ever been opposed… to your face? I’ve been the brunt of a barrage of accusations… but most of them behind my back. It seems most people these days aren’t ‘man enough’ to have it out in person. Whispered words of gossip… emails with barbed words of judgment. I’ve experienced them all.

Nehemiah could relate… many times over. He was opposed as a spiritual leader – and ridiculed as a business leader. How did Nehemiah find strength in his storm?

“But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat… I stood up and said… “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”

What Nehemiah set out to do was to restore Jerusalem as a place of protection, provision and house of worship. And when you set out to do something like that – mortal and spiritual enemies will oppose you!

Sanballat ridiculed their plan to re-establish worship. Tobiah taunted their construction skills. But Nehemiah and the people met their opposition firmly through prayer, and as they worked at building the physical wall of protection, they wore swords by their side because they knew they were in a battle.

Today our calling is the same. We will be opposed… but if we remember the Lord and recognize the source of the opposition, we will find the strength we need to continue building and protecting our precious families.
