Strength in the Storm of Negativity

In Daily Devotional by Brian Doerksen

Theme of the Week: Strength in the Storm

Bible Verse: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10

My dad was just a boy when an older man he idolized crushed him with words. One day he over-heard his grandpa say, ‘Harry won’t amount to much – he’s too weak’. Negative words have tremendous power, and for years my dad worked hard to prove his grandpa wrong. Even after grandpa died. When my dad told me this story I was confounded. I have always seen my father as a strong man – in body and character. I was the one who struggled with feeling weak. Was my struggle rooted in his?

We’ve all been battered by demeaning words and withering looks. Bullies have tried to make us cower in subjection. How do we find strength in the middle of these storms of negativity?

This short and powerful verse in Ephesians 6 shows us the way.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10

Our call to be ‘strong’ is not about our bodies or our talents. It’s a call to be strong in the Lord. We don’t have to prove anything. We just have to be strong in the Lord – not in our flesh.
One of the break-through moments in my life came meditating on the name my father gave me. Brian has a root meaning of ‘strength of character’. Even if I don’t have the strongest physical frame, God has called me to strength, and he will empower me to be living proof of who He is.

Even though at times both my father and I still feel weak (that goes with the territory of hitting our 40’s and 70’s!), we know that God is strong and that His strength is made perfect in weakness.
