Strength in the Storm of Seduction

In Daily Devotional by Brian Doerksen

Theme of the Week: Strength in the Storm

Bible Verse: “Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.” Proverbs 27:20

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:2–6, Mark 12:29-31

The images of seduction seem to be everywhere now. Billboards… magazines… TV… and only a few mouse clicks away on the internet, millions more tempt and entice. We live in a culture obsessed with the expression of seduction – and its called art! With the porn industry bigger than pro sports and Hollywood combined, a storm is an apt picture for this swirling madness.

So what’s the best defense against this onslaught of lust?

Love.

If you are a married man, give yourself to loving God in worship; devote your romantic and sexual energy to your wife, and serve others while you live out your calling. If you are single – give yourself to loving God in worship, serving others and living out your calling. The best defense is always a strong offense.

I take Joyce on a date every week – not out of duty but delight! Dating is even more important after the wedding. 2019 marked our 35th wedding anniversary. We are more in love than ever. We don’t try to keep on falling in love – we rise to love; serving and romancing each other. We serve each other in the kitchen and we satisfy each other in the bedroom.

These things, along with the power of prayer and community of faith form a strong wall that cannot be breeched by the enticement of unfaithfulness. Do I still feel the pull of what’s on the other side of the wall? Yes, I’m a normal guy. It doesn’t go away when you get older. If anything, increased power and wealth brings more temptation.

But I’m at peace in the eye of this storm… because I am loving the Lord my God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength… and I’m loving my first neighbor, my beautiful wife, with my passion and my life. And that’s the purest and safest place to be in this storm.
