The Assurance of Hope

In Daily Devotional by Kirk Giles

Bible Passage: “A light for revelation …” (Luke 2:32 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Luke 2:30-32

If you are a dad, you remember the excitement and preparation that came with realizing your first child was on the way. The hope of a baby coming into your life makes everything else seem secondary. There is a nursery to prepare, clothes and diapers to purchase, and all the emotional preparation of how your life is about to change.

Then comes the day when you hold your son or daughter for the first time, and time seems to stand still. Your hope has been realized.

That moment is a small taste of an eternal truth: the birth of Jesus was the fulfillment of hope.

However, the birth of Jesus was not the end of this promised hope; it was only the beginning of the next chapter.

When Simeon is celebrating the birth of Jesus, he makes this powerful declaration:

This child is “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory to your people Israel” (Luke 2:32).

Imagine someone telling a new parent that their child is going to change the entire world. That seems like a lot of pressure to put on a new baby. However, as we have seen, Jesus is not just any baby; He is the Messiah God had promised and that His people had been hoping for.

The birth of Jesus was not only the fulfillment of the hope of those who were waiting for the Messiah at that time, but it was also the assurance that you and I could also find true hope in Him.

Jesus is a light for revelation. God sent His Son to bring light. He knows that, without Him, humanity is wandering in the dark—stumbling around and in need of hope. This baby born two thousand years ago is the light to reveal God’s salvation and promise of hope to the world.

God kept His promise to send the Messiah, and because He did, you and I can be assured He will keep His promise to bring eternal hope.

Prayer: Father, help me to see the birth of Jesus with even more joy and hope than I would the birth of any child in my life today. Amen.

Reflection: In what ways has Jesus been a light in your life?
