Bible Passage: “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-6 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Philippians 4:8
Purity culture had the right idea.
It’s just that some (not all) of its fruit turned out to be rotten.
These are not easy times, and these are not light matters. Men who follow Jesus and revere Scripture do value purity, and we value what God has to say about sex and sexuality.
We should never throw babies out with bathwater. Some today are throwing away biblical views of sexuality due to the harm they experienced from some of the purity culture teaching back in the day.
We should have compassion for those who have been hurt. We should bring comfort where we can, and we should repent and make amends if we need to.
But men must also recapture and hold fast to the best aspects of purity culture, and what it called men to be:
Men who honor God’s design for marriage and sex.
Men who value men as men and women as women, made in the image of God.
Men who turn from lust and take responsibility for their sin instead of blaming women.
Men who honor their wives and don’t force them into anything against their will.
Men who acknowledge their sexual sin and turn away from it, receiving forgiveness as they do.
Men who leave their sexual shame behind, knowing that shame doesn’t actually bring about godly change and that true transformation comes from a closer walk with Jesus.
Even as we rightly should adjust what “purity culture” means, we don’t turn away from purity. We embrace God’s design for our bodies and relationships, and embrace being a man who follows His ways.
Prayer: Lord, Your way is perfect, and Your purity is essential. Help me to be a man who walks in this purity and inspires others to do the same. Amen.
Reflection: What has been your biggest takeaway this week? Why was it important to you?
