The Boundless Gift

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Theme of the Week: Forgiveness is Freedom

Bible Verse: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Scripture Reading: Romans 5:1-21

A friend of mine sold her house to the son of a multi-billionaire. Her house was expensive, somewhere north of two million dollars, but to a multi-billionaire, even that high price was a drop in a bucket.

Imagine that the buyer and my friend decided to go for a coffee to celebrate the deal and my friend offered to pay, but, after ordering the drinks, realized that she had left her wallet at home. How much of a strain on the buyer’s budget do you think it would be for him to pay for the drinks? He would have more than enough to cover the tab; the cost of two cups of coffee wouldn’t even register.

Our sins are not a drop in a bucket. The depth of sin that humanity has amassed is astounding. It is more than we could ever hope to pay. But the holy blood of the perfect Saviour is more than equal to it.

Because Christ gave His whole life, we can be sure that the sacrifice, the payment, the ransom, was enough to cover all our sin, no matter how great it is. Christ’s gift was infinite, and infinite trumps finite every time.

You never have to wonder if your sins can be forgiven. You never have to worry that maybe you crossed a line and committed one too many or one too big.

This is why John can say with confidence, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Not some unrighteousness or most unrighteousness. All unrighteousness!

Don’t hang on to sin. Confess it all and receive the infinite forgiveness that Christ offers.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you know my heart. You’ve seen the sins I have committed. You even see the sins I will commit. Thank you that Your gift of forgiveness is boundless. There is nothing that Your payment can’t cover. I confess my sins to You and receive all that You have for me. Increase my capacity to forgive others. Let me draw on your account and readily release anyone who has hurt or offended me. For your glory, for my joy and for the hope of the world. Amen.

Reflection: Is there a sin in your life that you feel that Jesus can’t forgive? Remember that His gift of life is infinite. Think of that multi-billionaire house buyer. Jesus can and will forgive every sin that you confess to Him.
