The Culture Around Sin

In Daily Devotional by Mike Gordon

Theme of the Week: Sin Is Real

Bible Verse: Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2, CSB

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1-21

Another translation of today’s scripture says, “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking.” (The Message) How true is that today?

Over the last few decades, our country has grown more and more post-Christian and maybe even post-modern in some parts of Canada. The result of this is that people are no longer following God. What was culturally understood to be sin or wrong in the past is no longer considered sin today. In fact, in some conversations today, taking a biblical stance in some of these areas makes you look wrong in our culture’s eyes. How did we even get to that point?

Is it because we focused too much on the hellfire and brimstone side of sin, which eventually caused a generation to leave the church? Or is it because some churches no longer talk about sin at all, hoping this what will get people back into the church?

At one point in modern Canada, the church set the moral temperature in our country. But, as each generation passes, it seems like God and his ways are no longer being passed on to the next generation.

Just because the majority of our country is no longer following God, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t thrive to walk in righteousness. Culture should never decide which sins are acceptable just because the times are changing. Unfortunately, I think many men have allowed the culture to dictate how they view sin, and many men have fit into the culture without thinking.

Have your attitude, thoughts and approach to sin changed over the years? If the Bible never changes, how we view sin should never change, no matter how popular or acceptable it has become in today’s society.
