Bible Passage: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 22:34-40
The first mark of a Godly life is learning to receive God’s love and love Him back.
Knowing, being loved by, and loving God is the keystone habit of being the man God made you to be.
A few weeks ago, I was privileged to participate in something called Father-Son Team Day. Christian Service Brigade invites men and boys to a rustic camp to participate in a series of competitions, such as 22-caliber shooting and feats of agility.
At the end-of-day campfire, one boy said the best part of his day was beating his dad in archery. I was struck by the intimacy and joy between them as the son bragged and taunted his dad in front of all of us.
I doubt we’ll “beat” God in archery, but that same intimacy is available to us.
Men, is your walk with God vital? Is prayer a source of life or a neglected Christian duty? Have you come to recognize His voice and follow His leading? Does thanksgiving toward Him well up from deep within? Do you turn to Him in troubled times? Do you love His Word? Is empowered obedience to Him the defining mark of your work, relationships, leisure, and finances?
Have you experienced God loving you?
Last week I failed as a dad (more than once). One night, I turned a minor infraction into a major incident. I was brokenhearted, and amidst my heaviness of heart, God brought to mind a hymn that made His grace and forgiveness fresh in my heart. I met my Father’s eyes and experienced Him loving me amidst my failure.
Many of us believe walking with God is part of a good life. We think Western culture won’t thrive without the Church and Christian values alike. We know the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge, but we haven’t always come to truly love the Lord or live in His love for us.
The first mark of a godly man is learning to receive God’s love and love Him back.
Prayer: Lord, I have some of this experience of knowing and loving You, but I want more. I want to want You more. Move me to seek You. Holy Spirit, impress Your glory and goodness on my heart and soul. Lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.
Reflection: How does this devotional strike you today? Where are you on this journey of receiving God’s love and loving Him back? Is it a reality for you, an aspiration, or even something you doubt is real? In light of that, what’s next
