What Marks a Godly Man?

In Daily Devotional by Tim Pippus

Bible Passage: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12:1-29

Evangelical culture is often fixated on getting people saved. Healthy churches are those where lots of new believers get baptized. Godly men, we’re told, are those who share their faith in a way that leads to such baptisms.

All of this is good, but this week we’re going to focus on what happens after a man gets saved.

A manly man is a godly man, and the marks of a godly man are the focus of the coming week.

Hebrews chapter 12 sets the stage well for us:

A godly man is one who “throws off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles” (Hebrews 12:1).

What do you need to throw off?

In our earliest days with Christ, we usually repent of the biggest and most obvious sins. We throw off a life of promiscuity. We repent of the obvious unloving patterns in our relationships.

But the need to “throw off” doesn’t go away. Some of us are raising children who will have seen us looking at our phones more than looking at them with love. Some of us are always spending foolishly, complaining about our wages, or checking our investments—our hearts rise and fall with the market. Many men are addicted to cynicism, criticism, pornography, and doomscrolling.

A godly man is also someone who perseveres in “fixing (their) eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2).

They marvel at how the Creator washed Judas’ feet. They meditate on how greed didn’t touch Him and how He could be angry without sinning.  They are amazed that Jesus knew when to nurture and when to rebuke, when to have dinner with the scandalous sinner and when to flip tables and challenge the establishment. Godly men fixate on Jesus more than on their careers, investments, Instagram, or anything else.

Conversion is only the beginning of a process of becoming godly men.

This week, we will focus on six areas that need development to become a godly man, 6 areas where we need to “throw off…” and “fix our eyes on Jesus” to be marked as “godly” in His eyes.

Until tomorrow…

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me a vision of a compelling life with You. Open my eyes to see the good plans You have for us. Help me see what renovations are needed in my life and in our community, where we might walk closely with You and become like You. Free us from the lies of our idols and addictions. Give us strength where we are weary, afraid, and in bondage. Fill us with Your Spirit and empower us to take the next steps. Amen.

Reflection: What do you need to throw you off? What aspect of Jesus’ perfect life is most compelling to you these days?
