Bible Passage: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Acts 4:1-22
Have you ever met somebody who thinks Christians are “boring?”
I have.
She was a colleague, very nice and great to get to chat with, but what I didn’t know was that as soon as she heard I was a former pastor, she thought I would spend my days preaching at everybody.
What did I do to accidentally break this idea?
I helped pull a prank on her.
As we were all laughing, she found out that I was involved, and her response was one of the most authentic I have ever seen as she looked at me and said, “And you call yourself a Christian!”
I simply smiled and said, “Let’s go have lunch, and I’ll tell you all about my college days.” I went on to tell her about some of the great pranks my buddies and I pulled off in the dorm.
The most interesting part about this conversation was discovering that she actually believed that Christians were boring. But that day, she met one who laughed, had fun stories to tell, and even agreed on the best rock band of all time, and we became friends.
The idea that Christians are boring interests me, and I wonder if we did it to ourselves in some way. When we read the stories of the Bible, we tend to read them flat, with no emotion. This builds a view that the people who lived these stories were also flat with no emotion.
Then we live out our faith flat with no emotion.
That isn’t even close to the truth.
Jesus wants to give us life “to the full” (John 10:10 NIV). I can’t imagine Him sitting with children and not laughing, going to a wedding and not dancing, or sitting by a fire with the disciples and not cracking a good joke. These are ordinary moments of joy in this life, and Jesus lived them all.
And those men who Jesus picked to follow Him closest? They are described as “unschooled” and “ordinary” (Acts 4:13 NIV).
To be a fisher of men doesn’t mean you have to be an articulate scholar with all the right answers. It means you are willing to be ordinary so that the Holy Spirit can do the extraordinary through you.
Because when people like talking with you, they just might be interested in listening to what you have to say, too.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You lived this life and know what it is to be human. Help me to trust You to do the extraordinary through my ordinary. Amen.
Reflection: When’s the last time you had fun around non-Christians while you maintained your faith? Find a way to do that this week!
