The Good Shepherd

In Daily Devotional by Kirk Giles

Bible Verse: “I am the good shepherd…” John 10:14 CSB

Scripture Reading: John 10:1-30

There are a lot of people who put a lot of energy into getting you to listen to them.

Every day, you are surrounded by people who have spent a ton of money on advertising to get your attention. This does not include the family, friends, co-workers, podcasters, and others who have opinions about everything in life. And then, the voices inside your head tell you different things you should believe, say, and do.

In today’s passage, Jesus calls Himself a “good shepherd.” With this statement, Jesus is declaring His great love and care for you. Sheep experience all kinds of voices – sometimes, those voices come from people who want to hurt rather than help. All around the sheep, there are threats to scatter and kill them.

The good shepherd knows His sheep – individually. He knows what makes them tick and what might be tempting to pull them away. He loves His sheep and is committed to their good. He also protects the sheep from attack and is so committed to them that He will give up His life so they can have theirs.

This is Jesus.

One of the remarkable statements Jesus makes is that the shepherd knows His sheep, and they know His voice. Imagine this: of all the voices you experience in life, you can hear one voice above them all. This voice is wholeheartedly committed to your good, protection, and fullness of life. He knows you better than you know yourself and knows exactly what you need in every moment of life.

There is a way to cut through the noise of all the voices in your life, and it’s found by hearing the voice of your Good Shepherd.

Prayer: God, help me to hear the voice of my Good Shepherd, Jesus, above all other voices. Amen.

Reflection: How can you intentionally hear the voice of Jesus above other voices in your life today? Do you trust this voice to be the Shepherd of your life?
