Bible Passage: “…he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.” (Titus 3:5-6 ESV)
Scripture Reading: Acts 2:38-39; Galatians 5:22-23; Titus 3:4-7
Although the central act of the Gospel is the Cross and the resurrection of Jesus, God’s redemptive plan continues in the lives of believers through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
When we place our faith in Christ, we are not left to struggle through life on our own. God Himself takes up residence within us.
At Pentecost, Peter told the crowds, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). The Spirit is not a “bonus” for certain Christians, nor does He occasionally or periodically come around to aid us. The Holy Spirit permanently infills every single believer. His presence is what makes us spiritually born again, and He continues to develop us as men as we live out our Christian lives.
The Holy Spirit does multiple things. He seals us as God’s sons, assuring us that we belong to Him forever. He comforts us when we suffer. He convicts us when we stray. He empowers us to live righteously in a world that constantly pulls the other way. Through His strength, we’re able to forgive those who wrong us. He enables us to resist temptation. And through His power, we can boldly share the Good News with others.
When the Holy Spirit fills a man, the result is true, transformed character: we will exhibit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
Too often, we forget that the same Spirit who empowered Jesus’ earthly ministry now dwells within us. That truth should fill us with extreme awe of God and confidence in Him! Many men wrongly think that we live the Christian life through our own willpower, but it’s actually the Spirit’s power working inside of us. Without His presence, we would be utterly incapable of growing in Christ.
This is the life the Gospel makes possible—by God living in His people.
Prayer: Father, thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to dwell in me. Fill me with Your presence today. Teach me to depend on Your power, to walk in obedience, and to bear fruit that reflects Jesus in all I do. Amen.
Reflection: Are you living each day aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power within you, or are you trying to follow Christ in your own strength? How might you trust the Holy Spirit more?
