The Gospel of the Kingdom

In Daily Devotional by Scott Roberts

Bible Passage: “Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.’” (Mark 1:14-15 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:10; Colossians 1:9-14

When Jesus began His ministry, His message was simple but world-rattling:

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the Gospel.”

Those words meant that God’s reign had broken into a dark and dying world with righteousness, peace, and power.

The Gospel, of course, is the Good News that Jesus Christ offers us a way to Heaven. And most of us are aware that Jesus will soon return to rule the earth physically.

But the Gospel is also about Heaven coming down to earth, into our hearts, through the Holy Spirit in Christ.

Before Jesus, the world was dominated by sin, death, and the kingdom of darkness. But when the Son of God entered the scene, the enemy’s grip started to crack. Demons fled, diseases were healed, and lives were restored. Everywhere Jesus went, the authority of God overpowered the chaos of evil. Though His miracles were acts of compassion to His people, they were also signs that the true King had arrived to reclaim His Creation.

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus dealt the crushing, fatal blow to Satan’s rule. The war is completely won, even though the final “cleanup” is still unfolding. When you trusted in Christ, you were transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of light (Colossians 1:9-14). You now live under a new King, one who calls you to reflect His rule in your words, actions, and relationships.

Every time you show mercy, forgive an enemy, or stand for truth, you’re displaying the values of God’s Kingdom in a world that desperately needs to see them. The Gospel invites you not only to be saved, but to be sent as well, to live as an ambassador of the King who reigns forever (2 Corinthians 5:20).

The world still waits for the day when Christ’s Kingdom will fully come, when every knee bows and every tear is wiped away. But until that day, godly men live as citizens of Heaven on mission here on earth, proclaiming with our lives that Jesus is Lord.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that Your Kingdom has come through Jesus. Teach me to live under Your authority, to obey You with joy, and to bring Your light into the dark corners of my world. Let my life reflect Your reign and draw others to Your Son. Amen.

Reflection: Where do you see opportunities today to show that Jesus—not the world—is the true King of your life?
