The Greatest Legacy We Can Leave Behind

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Passage: “We will not hide them from their children, but will tell a future generation the praiseworthy acts of the Lord, his might, and the wondrous works he has performed.” (Psalm 78:4 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Psalm 78:1-72

My mother hasn’t lived an easy life.

My father was abusive, and their marriage ended when I was a young child. My dad never paid child support, which left my mother broke with a mortgage and four kids. Life was never easy for her, and she carried an enormous amount of stress.

But I learned a lot from her. She never said a negative word about my father. I saw her depend on God through these trials and through this discovered that God was faithful. The trials were so severe that I knew she wasn’t pretending. She exhibited a resolute trust in God, no matter what happened. I remember thinking that if she could get through her trials with the Lord’s help, then I wanted whatever she had.

Because of her example, I came to trust the Lord.

I recently visited her and heard her singing in the other room:

All my life, You have been faithful

All my life, You have been so, so good

Later on, she explained to me that this is her testimony: that life wasn’t easy, but that God has been so good to her all the way through.

Talk about a legacy.

She’s given me something more valuable than any amount of money. She’s given me an example of trust in the Lord. Not an easy one, but a costly one. Her example has inspired me and, I believe, has inspired many others who have watched her life and learned from her example, too.

That’s the kind of legacy that I want to leave behind. I want people to look at my life and see that, despite the trials, God has been so good and He is worthy of being trusted.

I don’t want people to talk about how great my life was (I’m pretty sure they won’t). I want them to talk about how good God is, and how I proved Him faithful in all the trials.

I don’t think there’s a greater legacy that a man can leave behind.

Prayer: Lord, help others to see Your goodness and faithfulness through my life. Amen.

Reflection: How can you testify to God’s goodness and faithfulness in your life today?
