Bible Passage: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)
Scripture Reading: Galatians 2:15-21
My wife and I are passionate DIY home renovators with a particular fondness for HGTV and its myriad of inspiring shows.
One show that truly ignited our love for home transformation is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The show’s premise is both heartwarming and compelling: over the course of a dramatic seven days, a deserving family—often one that has faced significant struggles—receives a complete makeover of their home, transforming it into their dream home. This incredible transformation is achieved through the combined efforts of skilled volunteers and generous donations of materials and supplies from various sponsors.
The show’s pinnacle is the electrifying moment when the family anxiously awaits the reveal of their new home, their hearts racing with anticipation. As the climactic moment approaches, the familiar cry of “Bus driver, move that bus!” rings out, signaling the grand unveiling. The sheer joy and transformation on the faces of the family members, as they step into their newly renovated space filled with dreams and possibilities, is a powerful reminder of the impact a home can have on one’s life.
When we accept Christ as our Savior, God also anticipates a profound transformation in our lives.
This spiritual makeover does not happen overnight—it could take longer than seven days!—but it is expected to be significant and life-changing, much like the dramatic transformations often showcased in makeover shows.
The Apostle Paul articulated this transformation powerfully in his letter to the Galatians, where he wrote, “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). This means that our identities are no longer rooted in our past behaviours, failures, or worldly pursuits, but rather in the new life that emerges from our relationship with Christ.
So, what does this transformation look like in practical terms?
It manifests in a renewed mindset, a shift in priorities, and a growing desire to reflect Christ’s love and character in our everyday actions. As we allow Christ to shape us, we begin to exhibit qualities such as compassion, humility, and selflessness. Ultimately, the change is not just external; it’s a deep, internal reorientation that affects every aspect of our lives.
The most important thing is that, in faith, you believe in your new identity in Christ. You accept that your past does not define you, and that you are completely forgiven.
When we do this, God has full access to us, and our transformation can occur easily. This transformation will set us up to stand firm on Judgment Day, knowing that our new selves will have done good things that please the Lord.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the transformative change that comes through Your sanctification. Give us the courage to surrender everything to You so we can become more like Christ more effectively and live more in the ways You want us to. Amen.
Reflection: Where have you witnessed God’s transformation at work in your life?
