The Kingdom Coming in Joy to the World

In Daily Devotional by Steven Sukkau

Theme of the Week: Christmas Carols

Bible Verse: “For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.” Romans 8:19-23

Scripture Reading: 2 Chronicles 20:15, Matthew 6:9-13

In stark contrast to the doom-filled news cycle, Joy to the World is a triumphant picture of the world to come.

Rooted in Psalm 98, this beloved carol envisions that the long-awaited Messiah has returned a second time and established, fully and finally, His kingdom.

It’s a beautiful picture of hope fulfilled.

The carol comes to us from English writer and theologian, Isaac Watts. You may know his other works, including When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, and Our God, Our Help in Ages Past.

I love the picture of creation joining in the worship of its true king

Joy to the World recalls Romans 8:19-23 “For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.”

Too often we look at the news and world events filled with dread. It’s not hard to hear the despairing refrain at work or at the coffee shop. It can feel as if the world is descending into lawlessness, and the darkness has all but swallowed up the light.

While we must champion truth and justice in our communities, we can also be encouraged that Christ is coming back to reign in His kingdom. The distinction here is His kingdom, not ours, as we sometimes like to imagine.

What a glorious kingdom is coming, one that Joy to the World inspires us to remember:

He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your good plans for us and Your creation. Forgive us for all the times we doubted and despaired. Instead, fill us with your hope and joy, knowing that while we all have a part to play in bringing truth and justice, the battle is Yours in the end.

Reflection: What headlines have you read that filled you with dread and despair? Next time you’re tempted to lament that darkness has seemingly won, remember the Lord has the final word, and that His plans are good!
