Bible Passage: “So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace.” (Judges 6:24 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Judges 6:1-24
Have you ever had a season in your life where the longer you wrestled with a decision, the more your doubt grew?
It could be a family situation, a job, your church, or any number of other things.
No one wants to live in a state of doubt, but how do we move away from it and towards something better in the opposite direction?
So, what exactly is the opposite of doubt?
In Judges 6, we read about Gideon. The Israelites had been living under Midianite oppression for seven years. And it’s in this dark time that the angel of the LORD finds Gideon and tells him two things.
First, the angel says that the Lord is with him.
Second, the angel calls him “mighty warrior” (Judges 6:12).
And what does Gideon respond with?
Doubt.
First, he doubts God.
“’Pardon me, my lord,’ Gideon replied, ‘but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders…But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.’” (Judges 6:13).
Second, he doubts himself.
“’Pardon me, my lord,’ Gideon replied, ‘but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family’” (Judges 6:15).
But God is good, and He knows Who He is and who Gideon is in Him.
As this interaction continued, Gideon’s doubts turned into fear (Judges 6:22).
But God is good, and He gave Gideon the one thing he needed to overcome his doubts and fears:
Peace.
“So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace” (Judges 6:24).
Men, when it comes to our doubts, Gideon’s story can show us a few things.
One, godly men have doubts.
Two, God is with us; He is not afraid of our doubts.
Three, God sees so much more in us than we see in ourselves.
Four, peace is the opposite of doubt, and it is possible to have.
No matter what your doubt is, the Lord sees you and is with you, mighty warrior.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You see me better than I see myself. Thank You that Your peace is greater than my doubts. Help me to know Your peace more. Amen.
Reflection: Ask Jesus to give you His peace in your doubt. Then trust Him.
