The Real Problem

In Anger, Daily Devotional, Life Issues by Darryl Dash

Theme of the Week: Why We Can’t Get Our Act Together?

Bible Verse: “Either make the tree good and its fruit will be good, or make the tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.” Matthew 12:33, CSB

Scripture Reading: Matthew 12:33-37

I couldn’t believe it.

I had driven from our house to my wife’s work to pick her up. I waited in the car for her to come down. As the minutes passed, I could feel the tension build. By the time she arrived, I was ready to vent my frustration to her for causing me to wait so long.

The problem was clear to me: she was tardy. I was the victim of her actions, and I was right to express my anger.

I’m embarrassed as I think about how I acted now. Sure, my wife could have come down sooner. But Jesus identifies the real problem: “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for the tree is known by its fruit … For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. A good person produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil person produces evil things from his storeroom of evil.” (Matthew 12:33-35 CSB).

The problem wasn’t with my wife. The problem was my heart. My angry words revealed that something inside of me wasn’t right. My sinful actions came from a heart that was full of sin. My problem was deeper and more serious than I realized.
