The Strong Man

In Daily Devotional by Jim Ramos

Theme of the Week: Climbing the Mountain of Manhood

Bible Verse: When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 1 Corinthians 13:11 ESV

Scripture Reading: Matthew 17:14-21, 1 Corinthians 13:11

Manhood isn’t easy. In fact, it’s the most difficult thing a man will ever do. If it were easy, every male would be a man and every weak man would be strong. Manhood is a high and lofty goal because it’s a daily choice. We can be a man today and do manly things, then revert to boyish behaviors tomorrow. If you don’t believe me, just ask my wife!

If you really don’t believe me, ask your wife!

The goal of Strong Men, Dangerous Times is to define what a man is and does in a world that has blurred the lines. This, you’ll see, is the easy part. Any male can read this book but not just any man can live it out every day of his life. Like the Marine’s slogan, manhood belongs to the few, the proud. Author and friend Bill Perkins wrote, “We live in a time of spiritually passive men who can’t see that we’ve become spiritual jellyfish flowing with cultural norms.”

I couldn’t agree more. Manhood is not about age, appearance, abilities, anatomy, fame, status, or title. We do men a disservice by assuming they are strong men based only on these categories. A man is as a man does. It’s really that simple. Being called a man is a high compliment.

This week, we’ll fly over manhood at 30,000 feet and offer an overview of the five essentials of manhood. First, take note of the progressive form of each verb in the five characteristics of manhood. It is not by accident. The “ing” implies that manhood is a daily action. It’s progressive.

Manhood rests on how I live and the choices I make today. Yesterday’s decisions are gone. They’re history. They only exist in memory. Only today matters to a man.

A man is as a man does.
