Trading The Rotten For The Good

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Verse:  Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:9-10

Scripture Reading: Luke 19:1-10

Have you ever tried to build a house? What type of material would you rather use – rotting scrap boards or straight and solid new boards?

Of course, we would rather use the latter.

In the conversation of legacy, there is one name that has nagged in my thoughts – Zacchaeus.

Here is a man who built his legacy daily but was using the wrong materials. He had a reputation that spoke of using rotting scrap and crooked boards.

And yet, Jesus was not afraid of this. In fact, the way Jesus invited Himself over to his house, it was as if He was saying, “Hey Zac, let me carry some of those rotting, crooked boards with you.”

Then, as Jesus sat with Zac and his friends, without saying it, He seemed to tell him, “Now let Me trade you those crooked boards and give you straighter ones so that you can build a solid legacy — a legacy that will point to Me.”

Jesus knew it wasn’t a question of whether Zacchaeus was using rotting material but rather what he would do with it.

And what does Zacchaeus do?

He takes the trade!

What a beautiful moment of Jesus’ goodness and grace.

So, what materials are you using to build your legacy?

Is it the rotting and crooked boards of anger, jealousy, materialism, selfishness, lust, or any of the countless more I could list?

If you are human, the answer to that is “Yes.”

The next question is what you will do with them. Will you hang on to them, or will you take the trade Jesus offers you?

My advice – do what you need to and make the trade.

Go see a counsellor. Go apologize to that person. Tell your kids you love them and are proud of them. Do whatever it takes.

Let Jesus take your rotting and crooked material and give you His good stuff to build your legacy.

Prayer: Lord, my legacy is built with so much rotting material. Help me to surrender that to You and trade my crooked boards for Your straight and solid ones so that my legacy is built to show Your goodness and grace. Amen.

Reflection: What is something that you need to do today to build a stronger legacy with those around you?
