Train Before the Battle

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Passage: “Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.” (Psalm 144:1 NIV)

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 14:1-14

Have you ever heard a story of a man in battle who did the impossible, and wondered what it would be like to achieve that level of heroism? It’s inspiring to think of what one man can be capable of.

There is a common thread in most of these stories: how the hero relied on their training.

The Old Testament has some incredible accounts of heroic warriors—men who overcame incredible odds and gained victory.

But there is an element that we don’t read about: how they trained.

In 1 Samuel 14:1-14, Jonathan and his armor-bearer climb a cliff and defeat dozens of Philistine enemies. It’s an incredible victory.

The crazy part is that the two didn’t even see the towering cliff as an obstacle. They had a goal to see the LORD defeat their enemies. What the LORD needed from them was their faith and their physical strength to climb the cliff.

They were able to do it because they were trained for it. These were the boys who grew up climbing the trees and cliffs around them. As they got older, they began to do this with heavier supplies on their backs.

In other words, physical fitness was part of their everyday lives. They didn’t have a gym to go to or home workout videos. They simply physically trained in everything they did. Then, when their strength was needed, they were ready.

When it comes to our physical strength, we don’t all have to follow the same program. Many of us are able to go to the gym. That’s great. But maybe some of us can’t. Does that mean we can’t be physically stronger?

No.

The question is more about what you can do. Maybe you can go for a walk during your lunch hour. Maybe you can get a standing desk for your office. Maybe you start following a video workout that fits your schedule.

Whatever it is, find a way to make physical fitness part of your everyday routine.

It may just be the training God will need from you one day.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for giving me the ability to grow physically stronger. Help me find a way to make this part of my daily experience. Amen.

Reflection: What is one thing you can add to your regular daily routine to grow physically healthier?
