What Kind of King Will You Follow?

In Daily Devotional by Dany Soto

Bible Passage: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’” (Matthew 21:5 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:1-11; Zechariah 9:9; Philippians 2:5-11

This week, men will walk day by day through Passion Week, following Jesus on His journey to the Cross and learning how to be like Him as we do.

To begin:

Palm Sunday confronts every man with a question:

What kind of king are you willing to follow?

Jesus rides into Jerusalem, not with weapons or political power, but with humility.

The crowds shout praise and chant “Hosanna!” yet many expect a conqueror who will overthrow Rome and reestablish the splendour of David’s kingdom.

But Christ does not enter as a forceful ruler; instead, He reveals a deeper strength, the power of surrendered obedience. The power of humility. The power of trusting God.

Men often feel pressure to prove worth through dominance, success, or control. Jesus shows another path. True authority begins with submission to the Father. Christ’s humility is not weakness; it’s strength under God’s direction and trust in God’s plan.

Notice that Jesus intentionally fulfills prophecy here (Zechariah 9:9). Nothing about this moment was accidental. He walked toward suffering with full awareness of all that He was going to endure, but He did so to fulfill all that needed to take place for our sake (Hebrews 12:2).

Courage is not the absence of fear; it’s obedience despite fear…and here, Jesus, our King, enters Jerusalem knowing the Cross awaits Him, yet that doesn’t deter Him. He considered our freedom above His comfort.

Palm branches wave, voices rise, but Jesus sees beyond the applause. He knows how quickly praise can turn into rejection. Today they adorn Him with praise, but very soon they will adorn Him with pain…the crown of adoration will soon be replaced by a crown of thorns.

He knows this.

But their cheers were not His motivation. He sought to do what was pleasing to the Father, even if that meant lowliness of the humblest sort. Many men build identity on the approval of others. Christ anchors His identity in the will of God alone.

Palm Sunday calls men to lay down their own crowns. We do not follow Christ by demanding comfort, we follow by taking up our own crosses and walking where He leads.

Leadership in the Kingdom begins with humility, with quiet obedience, with a heart willing to serve even when it’s hard.

The King comes gently, yet His mission shakes eternity. For men to follow Him means allowing His humility to reshape our strength and to mold the way we live.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me strength that bows before You. Shape my heart to follow Your humility rather than the applause of people. Amen.

Reflection: Where do you rely on human approval instead of faithful obedience to Christ?
