Bible Verse: “We cared so much for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.” (1 Thessalonians 2:8)
Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12
When discipling another man, here are a few things you can talk about.
Talk about Scripture. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is to open the Bible and talk about what it says and what it means for our lives. Scripture is “profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 CSB). Try working through a passage and finding out what it teaches about God and about us, and how we should respond. You don’t need to be an expert; you just need to be a fellow explorer. David Helm’s book One to One Bible Reading provides helpful counsel on how to do this.
Talk about your life. Share what God has taught you throughout the years. How did God save you? How have you struggled? How have you found God faithful? What are you learning? What would you do differently? Share your life so that other men can see what it looks like to live a godly life and grow.
Ask good questions. Jesus was a master at doing this. Ask questions like these: Are you actively abiding with God through regular Bible reading and prayer? Do you see evidence that the Holy Spirit is growing your character? Is there anyone in your life with whom you are trying to reach for Christ? Are there ongoing patterns of sin that need change? Have you been experiencing any unique hardships? Any special joys? Are you maintaining healthy habits that reflect your needs as a creature made in God’s image?
Use all three categories. Mix it up. Have fun. You’ll cover the important issues, and it won’t be boring!
Prayer: Lord, please guide my discussion with other men, and use my conversations with them for Your glory. Amen.
Reflection: Which one of these three kinds of topics is least comfortable for you? How can you become more comfortable?
