When God’s Way Doesn’t Seem to Work

In Daily Devotional by Kirk Giles

Bible Passage: “If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:16-21; 1 Peter 5:7

One of the most frustrating things in life is following a plan and having it not work out.

Unfortunately, this is also a reality in relationships. You can follow God’s way of doing things, but it does not guarantee everything will work out the way God designed a relationship to work.

Reconciliation always requires both sides to be willing.

So what do you do when God’s way doesn’t seem to work?

The Bible teaches us two things to do in this kind of situation.

First, we are to do everything possible “to live at peace with everyone.”

In other words, go to incredible lengths to do everything you can to make the relationship work. Follow everything God calls for regarding reconciliation and harmony in relationships. Control the part you can control.

Second, leave the rest of the story in the hands of God.

God is just, and He will always make sure justice is ultimately carried out. There are a lot of men who love to fix things, but the reality is, you cannot fix another human being. You can love them, care for them, and forgive them, but you do not have the power to change their heart or their actions.

This does not mean you need to keep carrying the stress of that relationship’s brokenness. One of the most powerful invitations in all of Scripture is the opportunity to “cast all your cares on God, because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Your heavenly Father invites you to make your problem His problem.

Your calling as a man is not to fix a broken relationship on your own. Your calling is to be faithful to be the man God has made you to be. That’s what it looks like to be successful in the eyes of God.

Prayer: God, I think I have done everything You call me to do in this relationship. I can’t change this person’s heart, but You can. I give our relationship to you. Amen. (Keep praying words like this until your heart and soul believe them.)

Reflection: Are you doing everything possible on your end to live at peace with everyone?
