Who is My Real Enemy?

In Daily Devotional by Kirk Giles

Bible Passage: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood …” (Ephesians 6:12 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:11-18

Do you ever feel like the person you’ve had a falling out with is your enemy?

That’s a strong word that most men don’t usually use to describe another person.

Collins Dictionary defines an enemy this way: “Someone who wants to harm you, is opposed to you, and to what you think or do.” Cambridge Dictionary says an enemy is “a person who hates or opposes another person and tries to harm them or stop them from doing something.”

While you may not call the person you have a broken relationship with your enemy, it is quite likely that the way you are treating each other is the very definition of seeing someone as an enemy.

I remember a defining moment in one of the big conversations/debates/arguments my wife and I had in our marriage. God showed both of us that we were treating the other person like they were the enemy, when the Bible says the Enemy is the enemy.

The real enemy of broken relationships is the spiritual forces of darkness. Since the beginning of humanity, the devil has worked to destroy everything God calls “very good.”

It is critical to understand this and believe it. The devil is your enemy, who is putting thoughts and temptations in front of you and the other person that lead you to put your own wants, needs, and opinions ahead of each other.

When you understand who the real enemy is, you will be free to see the other person the way Jesus wants you to see them and free to take the steps God wants you to take.

To some people, fixing a broken relationship means “I might have to lose out while the other person wins.”

But in reality, fixing a broken relationship means the devil loses out, and you both win.

This truth can be a game-changer for you and help you tackle reconciliation God’s way.

Prayer: God, help me to see who the real enemy is in any broken relationship I face. Amen.

Reflection: How might identifying the right enemy make a difference in a broken relationship?
