Who Picks You Up When You Fall Down?

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Theme of the Week: Godly Men Are Team Players

Bible Verse: If one falls down his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up. Ecclesiastes 4:10 NIV

Scripture Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:10, Colossians 3:13

I used to be a runner.

I think the adverb “avid” would be a stretch to describe my running, but I did enjoy it.

As a kid in a small town and attending a small school, everything pointed to the fact that I was probably the fastest runner in the world. At eight years old, I knew of no other eight-year-old that was faster than me. My bedroom had blue ribbons in abundance.

Eventually, I quit running as a child. When you are on top of the world, where else there to go? I also left my hometown and discovered a much bigger world out there.

Later in life, I picked up running again and entered my first race. Sadly, there were no blue ribbons for me anymore. Apparently, they ran out of coloured ribbons long before they got to 157th place.

The guy who won the race was a good friend of mine. He beat out everyone, took a quick break, and then ran back the way he had come. Why would he do that? He was looking for me.

He wanted to encourage me to be the best that I could be. When he found me, he turned around again and ran the remainder of the race at my side, cheering me on.

As I said, 157th place was not going to win me any ribbons, but I did finish the race and I ran my personal best time.

This is a lot like our lives. We will not be the best at everything that will be required of us, and we may fail at the very things we want to do well at. In fact, we may want to give up at times, but with the right people around us, we can learn to dig in and give it our best.

We may want to give up at times, but with the right people around us, we can learn to dig in and give it our best.

In Philippians, Paul talks about the encouragement that we have in Christ. He is the friend that sticks closer than a brother and He wants you to succeed.

Do you a friend in your life like that? Who are you a good friend to?
