Who Shaped You?

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Passage: “Remember your leaders who have spoken God’s word to you. As you carefully observe the outcome of their lives, imitate their faith.” (Hebrews 13:7 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 13:1-8

One of the best ways to figure out how to leave a positive legacy for others is to figure out who left a positive legacy with you, and copy them.

As I look back, I can think of a number of men who have deeply shaped my life.

Denis Gibson not only pastored me when I was a kid, but also took an active interest in my life. Don Taylor showed up week after week and taught me in a damp basement classroom in the church. Stan Fowler not only taught me theology, but also became a friend. Ernest White saw something in me and believed that God might use me in ministry.

I could go on. Each of these men helped me become the man I am today.

I like to think about what I can learn from each of them. Like Denis Gibson, I want to be a faithful pastor and to genuinely love people. Like Don Taylor, I want to keep showing up. Like Stan Fowler, I want to be a good teacher and a good friend. Like Ernest White, I want to see the potential in others and encourage them that God can use them.

What I love about each of these men is how different they are from each other. You don’t need to have a specific personality type to leave a lasting legacy. You don’t have to be a leader. I also love that most of them seem completely unaware that they’ve made a difference in the lives of others, and yet they have done more than they know.

The people who have shaped us leave clues on how we can shape others. Think about the people who have left a positive legacy in your life. What did they do? How can you imitate their example?

These people can offer you valuable insights on how you, too, can leave a lasting legacy in the lives of others.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that You use all kinds of people. Thank You for those who have blessed me. Please use me to glorify You and bless others. Amen.

Reflection: Who’s left a legacy in your life? What can you learn from their examples?
