Bible Passage: “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” (John 17:3 ESV)

In yesterday’s passage, we saw that Genesis 4:1 reestablished God’s original design for marriage and sex, but it also pointed forward to an even more significant covenant.
The Hebrew word yada is used for our English word “knew” to describe Adam and Eve having intercourse (“And Adam knew his wife…”). Yada refers to a deep knowing of another person.
In today’s passage, Jesus prays to the Father and says that eternal life for a human is to know the Father. The Greek word used for “know” in this passage is ginosko, referring to a deep knowing of another.
Scripture is connecting the picture of human sex to spiritual unity with the Father.
In sexual relations, there is passion, anticipation, nakedness, and pleasure in the safe and exposed presence of our spouse. This results in a seed planted in the bride bearing fruit down the road.
While our relationship with God is obviously not sexual, this same phenomenon occurs on a spiritual level with Christ. We love Him, and He loves us, and we can be open and vulnerable (“naked”) as we experience connection with Him and inner joy, safe in His presence.
Just like Scripture says that God’s Creation displays His invisible attributes (Romans 1:20) and it uses the physical imagery of trees, lilies, birds, mountains, and more to showcase His character and glory, as odd as it sounds, He does the same with sex.
When Jesus is teaching on how to pray in Matthew 6:6, He says to go into our rooms and close our doors. He then says that what the Father sees in secret, He will reward.
Interestingly, in Psalm 127:3, Scripture says that the fruit of the womb, children, are a reward from God.
Again, Scripture is taking the picture of sex, two lovers in a marriage covenant in a room with a door closed that leads to children, and comparing it to spiritual intimacy that God desires to have with us, His Bride, in a room with the door closed that will bear fruit in our lives.
When we see, think about, or experience sexual relations, it’s powerful to see the character of God all over it because when we do, instead of moving towards lust, we can move towards communion with Him.
Prayer: Father, thank You for desiring connection with me. You have pursued me for my entire life, and You’ve made a way for me to experience all that I need in You. Your Word says that the fullness of joy is in Your presence (Psalm 16:11), and I want to experience all that You have for me. Teach me to prioritize You, to hear Your voice, to know You, and experience all that You want to give me. Amen.
