Your Two Most Important Days

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Passage: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.” (Matthew 25:21 CSB)

Scripture Reading: Matthew 25:14-30

If you want to leave a legacy, focus on two important days in your life.

The first day is the day of your funeral.

I know this sounds morbid, but it’s a useful exercise.

Write out what you hope people would say about you at your eulogy. What do you want them to say on that day? Are you currently on track for them to be able to say those things? How do you want to impact those closest to you?

Then consider any adjustments you need to make in your life to make that happen. Living backwards from that day will provide clarity about how you should live today.

But there’s a second and even more important day to focus on.

In the end, what matters most isn’t what other people say about a man, but what God says. Don’t just think about what others will say in your eulogy; think about the day you will see Jesus face-to-face. What will He say about how you’ve stewarded your life?

Will He say, “Well done”?

In his book Well Done: A Strategy for Life Stewardship, my friend Reagan Rose suggests that we consider the day we stand before Jesus and then work backward to become faithful stewards of every part of our lives. This will help us gain clarity about how we want to live today, so that one day we can hear Jesus say, “Well done!” when we meet Him face-to-face.

Think about these two days right now.

What will the people you love say about you at your funeral?

What will Jesus say about how you lived your life?

What adjustments do you need to make so that your eulogy will represent the legacy you hope to live, and so you can stand before Jesus and receive His commendation for your faithfulness?

Prayer: Lord, help me to live for these two days. Help me to live so I can hear Jesus say, “Well done.” Amen.

Reflection: What adjustments do you need to make in your life in light of these two days?
