EP 115: From Prison to Purpose with Cal Maskery

In Faith Journey, Podcast, Spiritual Growth by Cal Maskery

What happens when a man who seems destined for a life of crime encounters the transforming love of Jesus?

Cal Maskery grew up surrounded by addiction, alcohol, and crime. Following in his father’s footsteps, he found himself in and out of jail before landing in prison at just 21 years old, facing seven years behind bars. In one of his darkest moments, after asking a fellow inmate to stab him so that he might get transferred into a different prison, Cal cried out to God, desperate for a way out.

That’s when God showed up.

After hearing a Billy Graham message about God pardoning our sins through Christ, Cal surrendered his life to Jesus. He describes waking up the next morning with a peace he had never experienced before—a peace that has remained with him for more than four decades. And the transformation didn’t stop with him; his father, who had spent decades in prison, eventually came to faith in Christ too.

Today, Cal is the founding director of Shekinah Go, a ministry helping men overcome addiction, rebuild their lives, and find lasting freedom through faith, recovery, and community.

In this conversation with Jordan, Cal shares what Jesus has done in his life, why addiction is often about more than the substance itself, how unresolved trauma and shame can keep men trapped, and why genuine recovery requires forgiveness, accountability, and brothers who will walk alongside you. He also explains how the Canada Bible Society’s Overcomers recovery program helps men confront their past and move toward healing.

Whether you’re struggling with addiction yourself, walking alongside someone who is, or wondering whether a broken relationship with your children can ever be restored, Cal’s story and ministry will strengthen your faith today.
