Theme of the Week: The God Who Is There

Bible Verse: “He is before all things, and by him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:17

Scripture Reading: Genesis 50:15-21

Whether or not Jesus is the center of your story, it is important to know that he is still the center of the story. Colossians 1:17 tells us that “in him all things hold together.” Think about this: Every star in the sky and cell in your body is held together by him. There is not one part of life that he is not involved in. John Piper describes it as “the active sustenance and governance of the universe.”

This providence of God is practically illustrated for us in the story of Joseph. After selling their brother into slavery, these young men found themselves in a real dilemma when their family faced a famine. They soon discovered the person they would need help from is the brother they sold. Joseph’s time in Egypt was often very difficult – including time in prison. It would have been very easy for him to lose hope or try to take control of his life and do things his own way. But he rested in the reality that he is not the center of the story, God is.

As the brothers feared Joseph’s revenge, he makes this comment: “You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result – the survival of many people.” Even as Joseph’s brothers were actively involved in plotting harm against their younger brother, God was already at work to provide for their future need of food by placing Joseph in Egypt.

There may be times when your world is spinning apart, but you can rest assured that the providence of God shows he is already at work for something good that you cannot see today. You may feel like you are successful in life, but he is the One who has made it all possible and keeps it together.

He is the center of the story, and he is holding all things together.
